Key Scripture: Psalm 133 v1-3 (The message): ‘How wonderful, how beautiful, when brothers and sisters get along!...Yes, that's where GOD commands the blessing, ordains eternal life’. .
A happy family is a family that is united. As a local body of Christ and a family, it is important that we all get along. Of course, there will be times of disagreement. Also, each one of us will have people that we ‘gel with’ and deem our closest friend and confidant. That is natural. However we should all, in keeping with the word of God, cultivate an attitude of unity. By doing this, I believe that we will truly be blessed to fulfil our calling and purpose and therefore the mandate of the church of Christ today.
The Word of God in Psalm 133 v1 says that it is wonderful and beautiful when brothers and sisters dwell together in unity. It is indeed beautiful and pleasing to the ear when we hear a harmonious cord being played on the piano. We recognize music that is in ‘tune!’ However when the tune is compromised in any way i.e. a dis-cord is played, we often hear music that is ‘not in tune’. Thus the music is no longer beautiful but a clamour, a disruption, a disturbance.
The Bible says that when we are united, (just like music that is in tune), God commands the blessing, and ordains eternal life. In the early church, the apostles, met together regularly and were always in agreement. This enabled the Holy Spirit to empower and work through them to fulfil their calling. They were able to bring many to Christ, heal the sick, and cast out demons. God commanded a blessing and brought the gift of eternal life to many ‘dead’ situations around them:
‘And all the believers were meeting regularly at the Temple in the area known as Solomon’s Colonnade’……..‘The apostles were performing many miraculous signs and wonders among the people……Yet more and more people believed and were brought to the Lord—crowds of both men and women. As a result of the apostles’ work, sick people were brought out into the streets on beds and mats so that Peter’s shadow might fall across some of them as he went crowds came from the villages around Jerusalem, bringing their sick and those possessed by evil spirits, and they were all healed. ’ (Acts 5 v12-14)
Now let’s think about the scripture above for a moment; Is this not the work that we as believers are supposed to be doing here on earth….with signs and wonders following us?
Let’s be more effective in our calling. Let’s be like the harmonious cord from a piano. Let’s ask the Holy Spirit to help us to cultivate an attitude of unity today.
