This joyous Christmas season we celebrate the birth of our Servant King - Jesus. From the time of His birth He was declared and revealed to us to be King.
Matthew 2: 1 - 2
Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, [a]wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, 2 saying, “Where is He who has been born King of the Jews? For we have seen His star in the East and have come to worship Him.”
Yet this King did not come to be served and waited on. He came to serve God the Father, and to serve humanity. He came to serve you and I.
So, in Matthew 20: 27 – 28 He said:
27 And whoever desires to be first among you, let him be your slave— 28 just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.”
He set the ultimate example of what we His followers and disciples should be like.
John 13: 5 – 7, 12 - 17
After that, He poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet, and to wipe them with the towel with which He was girded. 6 Then He came to Simon Peter. And Peter said to Him, “Lord, are You washing my feet?”7 Jesus answered and said to him, “What I am doing you do not understand now, but you will know after this.” 12 So when He had washed their feet, taken His garments, and sat down again, He said to them, “Do you [a]know what I have done to you? 13 You call Me Teacher and Lord, and you say well, for so I am. 14 If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. 15 For I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done to you. 16 Most assuredly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master; nor is he who is sent greater than he who sent him. 17 If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them.
He humbled himself and abased himself to serve God and serve us.
He today calls us also to serve God, and to serve one another with humility, with great selflessness and with everything that we have.
The story of Christmas is the story of our Lord and Saviour that surrendered Himself to serve the purposes of the Father and meet the greatest need we had - that of reconciliation, forgiveness and salvation. He came to serve us!
So, let us also become servant disciples like our Servant King, serving God, serving His Kingdom, and serving others no matter what it costs us!
In all your celebration this Christmas, remember that He was the Servant King that calls you and I to follow, and be like Him.
