LESSON FROM A FIG TREE

 Mark 11:20-24

20 Now in the morning, as they passed by, they saw the fig tree dried up from the roots. 21 And Peter, remembering, said to Him, “Rabbi, look! The fig tree which You cursed has withered away.”

22 So Jesus answered and said to them, “Have faith in God. 23 For assuredly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be removed and be cast into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that those things he says will be done, he will have whatever he says. 24 Therefore I say to you, whatever things you ask when you pray, believe that you receive them, and you will have them.

Today many Christians do not realise or understand the power or authority they have in their mouth.

The world system is based on the power of words. Those who shout loudest get heard quicker than those who fail to speak or voice their concerns.

To obtain employment, you complete an application form or you send your CV to an employer. The employer vets your application form and selects you for an interview. At the interview you get asked questions, you are given the opportunity to sell yourself, depending on how you have performed at the interview you get given the job. Your new employer has never seen your work, but based on your spoken words you get given a job. Your written word lines you up for the job but it is your spoken word that got you through the door.

In Mark 11, Jesus tells His disciples to “have faith in God” after they saw the fig tree, He had cursed the day before wither within 24 hours. The disciples shocked that the tree had withered so quickly, drew Jesus’ attention to it and Jesus said to His disciples it is all about faith in God.

My research shows that a complete tree death typically occurs within 5 years, but can take as few as 2-3 years. Yet the tree Jesus cursed, withered within 24 hours. Jesus’ response to His disciples was you can do the same thing, if you can only believe.

If we can grasp the very truth that we have been created in God’s own image and that because all authority was given to Jesus, we are also partakers of it, we will become more conscious of how we speak and what we say.

Our speech has the power to activate things in the spiritual realm, our speech is an activator of spiritual functions. If you say the wrong thing you will activate the wrong spirit.

Jesus said to His disciples in Mark 11:23 For assuredly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be removed and be cast into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that those things he says will be done, he will have whatever he says.

The lesson here is whatever you say, whatever you open your mouth to request for, you will have it if you do not doubt, as long as it is in line with the will of God for your life. 1 John 5:14-15

14 This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. 15 And if we know that he hears us—whatever we ask—we know that we have what we asked of him.

Jesus spoke to the fig tree and cursed it and it withered within 24hours. Jesus was saying to His disciples and to us that we can change our situation with the words of our mouth. You can change the atmosphere in your home with your mouth. You have the power to declare a thing and it shall come to pass, because your Father who is heaven, watches over His word to perform it. When God created the planet, He spoke the word and everything in the universe came into being. Child of God, we are created in His image and have the authority and permission to use our mouth to create things. Let us use our mouth wisely.

Proverbs 18:20

A man’s stomach shall be satisfied from the fruit of his mouth;

From the produce of his lips he shall be filled.

Our inner satisfaction comes from our speech. Joy, happiness, breakthroughs all come from what you say with your mouth.

Today learn to change your speech because your speech will determine how victorious your life is. Intentionally change the course of your life by changing what comes out of your mouth. Many Christians have snared their lives because of the words that proceeded from their mouth. Your mouth carries the power to change your future.

Ephesians 4:29

29 Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers.

A corrupt word is a word that is contaminated, dishonest, that does not reflect the truth of God of God’s word. A lifeless word.

The words that proceed out your mouth can bring edification to you also, because you are also a hearer of your words. The words you speak should edify you and those who hear you.

Jesus concludes by saying, 24 Therefore I say to you, whatever things you ask when you pray, believe that you receive them, and you will have them.

Take a lesson from the fig tree.
