Devotional 2018 - Week 14

Exodus 16: 15 - 20 (NIV)

'When the Israelites saw it, they said to each other, “What is it?” For they did not know what it was. Moses said to them, “It is the bread the LORD has given you to eat. This is what the LORD has commanded: ‘Everyone is to gather as much as they need. Take an omer for each person you have in your tent.’ ” The Israelites did as they were told; some gathered much, some little. And when they measured it by the omer, the one who gathered much did not have too much, and the one who gathered little did not have too little. Everyone had gathered just as much as they needed. Then Moses said to them, “No one is to keep any of it until morning.” However, some of them paid no attention to Moses; they kept part of it until morning, but it was full of maggots and began to smell. So Moses was angry with them.'

The children of Israel were instructed by Moses NOT to save any manna until the next day. However, they believed their own judgement and made the decision to go against his word. They thought they knew best by holding onto manna and yet it turned to maggots the next day. They did not trust God for food the next day despite the fact that He had brought them this far.  How many times as Christians do we think we know the best decisions to make for our lives and even those of friends and family? How many times have we forgotten all God has blessed us with - the prayers He has answered?  God knows us inside out. He knows what we need as opposed to what we want.

We need to learn to trust God and build on our existing faith.  We cannot claim to be children of God yet rely on our limited wisdom and understanding when making decisions that will affect us and our families.  God will not fail us and He does not go back on His promises, therefore we have nothing to fear. We may not get the answer or outcome we were expecting but we can be comforted that if God closes  the door on something, it was not good for us.

Let us learn to let go and allow God to take over every part of our lives. Let us learn to surrender and be transparent with God about our fears of giving over everything.
