2 Samuel 6: 16 - 23 (NKJV)
6 Now as the ark of the Lord came into the City of David, Michal, Saul’s daughter, looked through a window and saw King David leaping and whirling before the Lord; and she despised him in her heart. 17 So they brought the ark of the Lord, and set it in its place in the midst of the tabernacle that David had erected for it. Then David offered burnt offerings and peace offerings before the Lord. 18 And when David had finished offering burnt offerings and peace offerings, he blessed the people in the name of the Lord of hosts. 19 Then he distributed among all the people, among the whole multitude of Israel, both the women and the men, to everyone a loaf of bread, a piece of meat, and a cake of raisins. So all the people departed, everyone to his house. 20 Then David returned to bless his household. And Michal the daughter of Saul came out to meet David, and said, “How glorious was the king of Israel today, uncovering himself today in the eyes of the maids of his servants, as one of the base fellows shamelessly uncovers himself!” 21 So David said to Michal, “It was before the Lord, who chose me instead of your father and all his house, to appoint me ruler over the people of the Lord, over Israel. Therefore I will play music before the Lord. 22 And I will be even more undignified than this, and will be humble in my own sight. But as for the maidservants of whom you have spoken, by them I will be held in honor.” 23 Therefore Michal the daughter of Saul had no children to the day of her death.
In this account of the Bible, we see Michal, King David’s wife and her reaction to her husband. She despised him and looked down on him because of his whirling and leaping before the Lord. She was disgusted with Him. She obviously did not realise that He was doing this as unto the Lord. She felt that He had disgraced himself before his subjects. He had brought himself low. Her perception was wrong.
The wrong perception in her heart caused her to then go on and say the wrong things about, and to King David. King David was coming home to bless his household which included Michal, but unfortunately, she met him with a wrong attitude and wrong words. Her attitude and her words put a stop to the blessing He was coming to release on His household. I believe that if Michal had held back on her words, David will have released the blessing of God over His household and Michal will have become fruitful and not remained barren all the days of her life. She missed out on the blessing. May you and I never miss out on the blessing of God for our lives in Jesus name!
For us who are married women, let us be careful not to despise our husbands. We don’t always have the whole picture even when we think we do. Let’s be careful of the words we speak to them. Let us not be condescending towards them or allow familiarity to breed contempt. Even when we don’t agree 100% with them, or we believe they are wrong, let’s be very careful of how we respond. Let’s understand that through our actions we could lose out on what we really need / desire / want, which God wants to bless us with. A wise way to approach things is to go to God in prayer.
Single ladies please learn the art of respect for the husband before you get into marriage. Don’t go into marriage with a haughty or condescending heart. Ask the Lord to fill you with humility and grant you lowliness of heart. One good lesson from this account is to be quick to listen and slow to speak. Learn to not jump to conclusions. It could be costly as we see in the case of Michal. She lost out forever on the blessing of a child from God.
What we can all learn also is not to despise God ordained authority over us. So, whether it be parents, or husbands, or Church leaders, don’t look down at them. Don’t disrespect them or belittle them with your words. Let’s give them reason instead to pronounce blessings over us like King David was coming to do over his household. May the Lord help us in Jesus name. Amen.
Grace to you……
