Mark 14: 3–9 (NKJV)
“And being in Bethany at the house of Simon the leper, as He sat at the table, a woman came having an alabaster flask of very costly oil of spikenard. Then she broke the flask and poured it on His head. But there were some who were indignant among themselves, and said, “Why was this fragrant oil wasted? For it might have been sold for more than three hundred denarii and given to the poor.” And they criticized her sharply.
But Jesus said, “Let her alone. Why do you trouble her? She has done a good work for Me. For you have the poor with you always, and whenever you wish you may do them good; but Me you do not have always. She has done what she could. She has come beforehand to anoint My body for burial. Assuredly, I say to you, wherever this gospel is preached in the whole world, what this woman has done will also be told as a memorial to her.”
There is not a price too much for our saviour and Lord Jesus Christ, is the message we learn from this woman with the alabaster flask of oil. He is worthy of the highest honour. This woman recognised Him for who He is and offered the most excellent sacrifice. She recognised Him as the Messiah, the Lord of Lords, the King of Kings, the Redeemer, the Lamb that takes away the sins of the world, the Saviour, the Son of God.....
We can bring a parallel here with Abel in Genesis 4: 4 who “brought of the firstborn of his flock and of their fat”. And the Lord respected Abel and his offering”. God was pleased with Abel’s offering just as Jesus was pleased with this woman’s gift and said “She has done a good work”.
In both cases they gave of their own free will. No one asked them to, no one cajoled them to. It was not required of them by God. They gave their very best because they recognized who they were giving to. They did what no one else had ever done. Why, because they understood who they were giving to.
God deserves our lavish giving to Him, and even though others might not understand why we give so lavishly, let’s do so out of a heart of love and gratitude to Him. Let’s give lavishly of our time, our praise, our money, our gifting, our substance and all we have, to the King of Kings. For He alone deserves the highest honour, glory, and adoration. My sisters that is what WORSHIP is all about.
