Deuteronomy 6: 1-9 (NKJV)
“Now this is the commandment, and these are the statutes and judgments which the LORD your God has commanded to teach you, that you may observe them in the land which you are crossing over to possess, that you may fear the LORD your God, to keep all His statutes and His commandments which I command you, you and your son and your grandson, all the days of your life, and that your days may be prolonged. Therefore hear, O Israel, and be careful to observe it, that it may be well with you, and that you may multiply greatly as the LORD God of your fathers has promised you—‘a land flowing with milk and honey.’ “Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one! You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength. “And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up. You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates."
God has always desired that His Covenant people, together with each member of their families live for Him and obey His commandments. We see this in God’s relationship with the children of Israel and it is the same thing today in His relationship with us as believers in Jesus Christ. He wants us together with all members of our families to obey, serve Him and live for Him. He wants us all together as individual families, to love Him with all our heart, soul and strength.
We are to keep His commands and His Word in our hearts and speak it with our children at every opportunity. We are not to be afraid to speak God’s Word and will to them. Instead we are to ask God for His wisdom to speak appropriately and be guided by the person of the Holy Spirit in speaking.
When we are at home with them, when we are out with them, before we go to bed, when we wake up in the morning. At every opportunity and in every circumstance, please speak the Word of God to your children. Let them Know God’s will in every matter. Start doing it when they are very young and don’t give up when they grow older. To do this you have to fill your hearts with God’s Word. The Bible tells us that out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. Be careful of what fills your heart. Let your home visibly display God’s Word and presence as much as you are able to. Don’t forget your younger brothers and sisters, nephews, nieces and grandchildren too if you have them. Whenever the opportunity presents itself, please seize it and speak God’s Word to them. Be loving, be gentle and meek but do speak the Word with God’s wisdom.
