Romans 12:2 (NIV)
"Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is - his good, pleasing and perfect will."
When we desire the things of this world more than God; confusion, discontentment, envy and many other ungodly traits can befall on us. The principles in which we choose to live by should come from the word and not the world.
It is only by reading the word that we gain strength, understanding and a passion to do God's will. We may believe we know what His will is for our life but when we lean on our own understanding, our actions and motives can be fleshy and not at all rendered to the heart of God. Even when we think we are doing "good", our motives may actually derive from a bad heart. Jeremiah 17 verse 9 (NIV) talks about the condition of our hearts;
"The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can even understand it?"
We do not know the depths of our heart, the wickedness that lies deep within which is why we desperately need to check our hearts on a daily basis. We desperately need to ask God to reveal our hearts enabling us to put aside those thoughts and those actions that are displeasing to Him.
