Luke 10: 38-42 (NKJV)
“Now it happened as they went that He entered a certain village; and a certain woman named Martha welcomed Him into her house. And she had a sister called Mary, who also sat at Jesus’ feet and heard His word. But Martha was distracted with much serving, and she approached Him and said, “Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Therefore tell her to help me.”
And Jesus answered and said to her, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things. But one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her.”
How important it is to take time out and sit at the feet of Jesus regularly. We live such busy lives as women doing a hundred and one legitimate things day in day out. We take our example from the Proverbs 31 woman who was a hardworking busy woman. This is all “good” and there is nothing wrong in doing that. There is however one thing that is even better – taking time out to leave everything and sit at the feet of Jesus and let Him speak into your lives.
It is important that we create time to just be in the presence of Jesus and let Him speak into our lives His wisdom and counsel. You might want to take a day off from work just to spend them with the Lord, in His Word, in prayer, in praise and worship, in being silent in His presence and just listening to him. On the other hand you might want to invest your money into going away for a day or weekend retreat just by yourself, to draw close to Jesus and hear His words of life. You could plan well in advance and ask a family member or friend or sister in the Church to look after your children, just for the purpose of sitting at Jesus feet like Mary did. You could close your eyes to housework and all that is screaming for your attention just to spend time listening to a message that will draw you close to Jesus. You could say no politely to an invitation just so you can draw strength from being in His presence. The message in all of this is Mary chose the more important part. You and I will do well to emulate her example.
