The Kingdom at the Core of Jesus’ Mission
Matthew 6:9-10
9 In this manner, therefore, pray: Our Father in heaven,
Hallowed be Your name. 10 Your kingdom come.
Your will be done On earth as it is in heaven.
Luke 11:1-2
11 Now it came to pass, as He was praying in a certain place, when He ceased, that one of His disciples said to Him, “Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples.” 2 So He said to them, “When you pray, say: Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done On earth as it is in heaven.
Jesus did not just mention the Kingdom; He made the Kingdom central theme of His preaching and His Prayers, His parables, His miracles, and His mission. When we read the Gospels, it becomes obvious. Jesus spoke about the Kingdom more than anything else. Not church growth. Not personal success. Not even heaven as a destination. The Kingdom was important to Him — and He intended it to be ours. Jesus began His ministry with:
“Repent, for the Kingdom of heaven is at hand.”
Matthew 4:17
From that time Jesus began to preach and to say, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”
He taught His disciples to pray for the Kingdom.
Mtthew 6:10
10 Your kingdom come. Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
He sent them out to announce the Kingdom.
Matthew 10:7
7 And as you go, preach, saying, ‘The kingdom of heaven is at hand.
He demonstrated the Kingdom through healing, deliverance, compassion, and justice.
Luke 11:20
But if I cast out demons with the finger of God, surely the kingdom of God has come upon you.
He described the Kingdom with many parables, as seeds, yeast, treasure, nets, pearls, fields — because He wanted us to understand, desire and be part of His Kingdom.
I believe that the high calling of God on our lives is to declare and establish His Kingdom here on this earth. It’s not about how visible or impressive our role is. It’s about alignment with God’s eternal plan for humanity. The death of Jesus on the Cross was never for a massive gathering of people here on earth but for the establishment of the Kingdom of God on the earth.
When Jesus taught us to pray, He wasn’t giving us a religious babbling, He was giving us a blueprint to a greater relationship with our heavenly Father. He was giving us an understanding of what it means to align ourselves with the will of God whilst on this earth.
“Our Father who art in heaven” …. “Let Your Kingdom come.”
“Let Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.”
So, what is the Kingdom of God. In Romans 14:17-18, Paul puts it this way.
17 for the kingdom of God is not eating and drinking, but righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit. 18 For he who serves Christ in these things is acceptable to God and approved by men.
So, we can see that God’s Kingdom is more of -
- God’s rule expressed through God’s people
- God’s will been done in our homes, our relationships, our decisions, our work places and the lists go on.
- It is Heaven’s life style invading earths.
- The light pushing back darkness – John puts it this way in John 1:5 "The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it."
- Righteousness, peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit
- It is walking in humility just as He walked.
Every believer, every one who is born of God — no matter how “little” you think you are, no matter what circumstance has thrown at you, no matter you background, no matter you are called you carry a Kingdom assignment. Jesus told His disciples in John 13:15-17
15For I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done to you. 16 Most assuredly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master; nor is he who is sent greater than he who sent him. 17 If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them.
The Kingdom advances through our obedience to do what Christ commanded us, being faithful stewards of what has been committed into our hands and the Kingdom advances through Spirit-empowered living (not by power not by might but by my spirit says the Lord) The Kingdom is not enforced by human strength, charisma, entertainment or strategy. The Kingdom is birth, sustained, and expanded by the Spirit of God.
In the book of Habakuk 2:14 Habakuk writes
14 For the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the LORD as the waters cover the sea.
It is through us that the knowledge of the glory of the Lord will fill the earth as we yield ourselves to His Spirit.
- The Spirit convicts’ hearts
- The Spirit transforms lives
- The Spirit empowers witness
- The Spirit breaks strongholds
- The Spirit reveals Christ
Ours is to be available; When He (The Holy Spirit) comes He will convict the world of sin, of righteousness and of judgement….
If Jesus made the Kingdom His priority, then the high calling of every believer is to make the Kingdom of God our priority — in their home, workplace, ministry, relationships, decisions, and daily rhythms.
Lord let your Kingdom come and Your will be done here on earth as it is heaven. Amen
